The first gallery space in Rome, was located in a small unusual room near the Vatican.Since the project's inception, the gallery has been focused in proposing to the artists spaces an in proposing to the artists spaces and contexts that could allow them an experimental approach to the exhibitions.
During MONITOR's first years of activity, most of its program was turned to international emerging artists, experimenting diverse practices from Sculpture to Installation-based work, with the largest core dedicated to Video and Film. Some of these artists are now institutionally recognized mid-career artists such as Nathaniel Mellors, Laurent Montaron, Alexandre Singh and Guido van der Werve.
Since the 2010s the gallery has broadened its attention to other media, especially Painting - showcasing a heterogeneous and transgenerational rooster of painters. In the older generations the gallery presents large offbeat abstract practices from the 20th Century, such as Italian artist Claudio Verna or Duane Zaloudek from the US. Figurative painting is represented by artists that range from their 20s to 40s such as Thomas Braida, Benedikt Hipp, Peter Linde Busk, each of them with attentive and idiosyncratic bodies of work.
In 2014, Paola Capata opened a pop-up space in Downtown Manhattan, NYC, titled MONITOR Studio. This was an hybrid gallery space, where several shows and film screenings were organized, ending its activity as an Artists' Residency project in 2015.
After that experience, the gallery opened a branch in Lisbon during 2017, which is meant to have a permanent, curatorial, project-space nature - establishing its position in the Portuguese art community quite rapidly.
MONITOR is extremely engaged with the artistic communities in its locations. In Lisbon's case, it presents an independent program, finding unity not only through the conceptual research of its exhibitions but also in the provenience of the artists.
